Three years ago, a group of researchers at a university had a guess. They knew that many apples being 31 to kids as part of the National School Lunch Program were ending up in the trash, almost untouched. But unlike others, they 32 if the reason was more complicated(復雜的) than simply that the kids didn’t want the fruit. They thought that was because the apples were served 33 , rather than sliced (切成片的). And they wanted to 34 this idea.

They carried out a study at eight schools and found that fruit consumption( 消 耗 ) 35 by more than 60 percent when apples were served sliced. They 36 made a further study at six other schools, which not only showed the same result, but further 37 it. Both the overall apple consumption and the percentage of students who ate more than half of the apple were more than 70 percent higher.

Based on these 38 , it seems that even the simplest forms of inconvenience(不便)can influence us. Sliced apples just make more sense for kids. Just imagine that a child holding a whole apple has to break the skin, eat around the core (果核), and 39 the inconvenience of holding a large fruit. These problems might seem silly or unimportant, but they’re important when you’re 40 teeth or have braces(牙箍), as so many kids do.

It’s one of those situations where what seems like a really small inconvenience actually makes a huge difference.

Tons of people enjoy listening to different types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Many believe that music helps get the creative juices flowing, but an international new study is challenging that view by putting volunteers through a series of tests.

The study was performed as a joint partnership between psychologists at three universities in Europe. The results suggest that any task that relies on verbal (與文字有關的) creativity was weakened when listening to any type of music.

Subjects (受試者) in the project all spoke English as their first language, and had no problem in their sight or hearing.

The tasks were simple word games. For example, subjects were given three words, such as dress, shine, and

flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word which could be connected with all three to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunflower, etc).

Subjects completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while they were played background music with foreign lyrics (歌詞), English lyrics, and instrumental music with no lyrics at all.

The research team also tested the library background noises, but found that such noises had no great difference in subjects’ creativity. The study’s authors believe that was the case because library noise is a “steady state” environment which is not as disruptive (擾亂的). Music with or without lyrics is characterized by changes in pitch or tone.

It’s worth mentioning that even familiar music with well known lyrics weakened subjects’ creativity, even when subjects said that they worked or studied with music on regularly and the music improved their overall mood.

So next time you sit down for a study session with those lo-fi beats, you may be giving your brain something else to focus on rather than your work.

4. What does “that view” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A. Listening to music impairs creativity.

B. Music helps improve our creativity.

C. Listening to music while working is so common.

D. People enjoy listening to different types of music.

5. According to the word game in Paragraph 4, if volunteers are given three words “foot, base, basket”, what is the single word?

A. case. B. ball. C. line. D. print.

6. Which of the following statements does the author probably agree?

A. Library noises are characterized by changes in pitch or tone.

B. Different kinds of music impair different parts of our brains.

C. You may do your work better without listening to music.

D. Music cannot disrupt the verbal working memory of the disabled.

Jeremiah hurried into the kitchen and washed his hands. He had just one hour until his father got home. He wasn't used to starting dinner this early. On his nights to cook, Jeremiah generally got dinner ready in fifteen minutes. But Dad always praised Jeremiah's meals, no matter how simple they were. “Delicious!” he would say.

But Jeremiah knew Dad liked more complicated dishes, because on Dad's nights to cook, he used a ton of ingredients(原料). Dad was a natural cook. Not Jeremiah—at least, not until tonight.

It was Dad's birthday, and for once in his life, Jeremiah was cooking something complicated spaghetti(意大利面條) with homemade sauce. He'd eaten it a million times, so he knew most of the ingredients. "Tomatoes, onions, garlic, beef," he thought, looking through the fridge. They had everything except the beef. No problem — they'd go vegetarian tonight.

Jeremiah cut up the vegetables with Dad's special knife and put them into the pot. Then he turned to Dad's spice ( 香 料 ) collection. He picked a few familiar ones and put them in. The pleasing smell of fresh tomatoes amazed him. He tasted it just as Dad usually did. It was terrible! Way too spicy. Aha! A lime would cool things down. He added in as much lime juice as he could. One more taste. Ugh. It was awful! Now the sauce was sour and spicy.

He left the kitchen and went into his room. He could at least order pizza, so Dad wouldn't have to stay hungry on his own birthday. As he counted his money, he heard the front door open.

"Hi, Jer!"Dad called. "Coming."

Jeremiah returned to the kitchen, where he found Dad digging through the food cupboard. "I'm buying pizza," Jeremiah said. "It's not much of a birthday dinner. . . "

Dad turned, holding a bag of chips and a bowl of Jeremiah's spaghetti sauce. "We don't need pizza!" Dad smiled. "This delicious salsa(薩爾薩辣醬)is a meal in itself!"

7. Why did Jeremiah decide to cook something complicated?

A. Because he arrived home early.

B. Because his dad told him to do so.

C. Because it was his dad's birthday.

D. Because he was a natural cook.

8. Jeremiah thought the sauce he made was .

A. neither sour nor spicy enough B. different from what he had expected

C. tasted awful without beef D. as delicious as he had imagined

9. What can we learn about Jeremiah's father?

A. He pays no attention to his food. B. He is creative and strict.

C. He expects his son to be skillful. D. He is loving and encouraging.

D

I have a question for all of us. Is all winning success? Winning is really, really fun. But I am here to share my views on what a real success is.

All around the world, we have created the win-at-all-cost cultures. As a society, we honor the champions. We cheer for those people who win championships, elections and awards. Winning at all costs has become acceptable. We have become so focused on that end result instead of the process, and particularly when the end result is a win, usually how we got there often gets swept under the proverbial rug.

We need to redefine (重新定義) success. Real success is developing champions in life for our world, win or

lose. We may be able to plan our way to a win, but we can't plan our way to success.

Back to 1990, when I was first made the head coach of the UCLA Women's Gymnastics Team, the best I could do was what other “successful” coaches had done. So, I became tough-talking and mean. I acted like a head coach whose only thought was to figure out how to win.

After putting up with me for a few years, our team asked me for a team meeting. And for over two hours, they gave me examples of how my arrogance ( 傲 慢 ) was hurtful. That was my time-out, and I chose to change. I realized that I needed to support our student athletes as whole human beings, not just athletes who won.

It is so much easier to give orders than to actually figure out how to motivate (激勵) someone to be better. And the motivation takes a really long time to take root. The key ingredient was to develop trust through patience and honesty.

Let's think about what you are talking with your parents on the car ride home. Are they focusing on the end result? Are you excited to use that time to show you are a winner? All of you care too much about the end result instead of your steps of learning.

We are all coaches in some ways. We all have the responsibility to develop champions in life for our world.

That is what real success looks like, and that is what we call a win-win.

10. The underlined phrase “gets swept under the proverbial rug” probably means “ ”.

A. catches little attention B. does some harm

C. shows the result D. decides the success

11. The writer mentions his experience as the head coach to show .

A. it's difficult to teach athletes how to win

B. how his team won those championships

C. why his team asked him for a meeting

D. motivating others matters more than giving orders

12. Which of the following is a real success according to the writer?

A. A kid who shows the medals and prizes he won to his parents.

B. A player who tries to win a gold medal at the cost of his health.

C. A coach who respects his members even though the team didn't win.

D. A parent who keeps asking about the grades his kid gets in the exams.

五、信息還原(共 5 小題;每小題 1 分,滿分 5 分)

Have you ever been to a buffet restaurant(自助餐廳)? You can eat as much as you want for one low price at these places.

Sadly, many of these restaurants have closed in the USA because of the COVID-19 pandemic(新冠疫情). At buffet restaurants, people have to share one serving area when they get their food. 53 But for a long time, they were quite popular.

“Buffet” is the French word for sideboard—a piece of furniture that was used to serve food and display serving dishes. 54 serving yourself from a wide selection of dishes, including soups, salads, and other dishes that are easy to share.

55 That is to way, you pay one price and can go back to the buffet table for seconds, thirds, or even fourths!

In fact, one of my first experiences with Chinese food was at a buffet. Chinese buffets are very common in the US. Even in the small town where I went to college, there were three different Chinese buffet restaurants. 56 We would pay just eight dollars to eat plate after plate of kung pao chicken, ginger beef, and egg rolls. 57

When we talk, we often make hand movements 68 (call) gestures( 手 勢 ) at the same time. 69 almost everyone gestures when they talk, we usually do not even notice the gestures. However, our hand gestures play 70 important role in helping us learn and remember!

When learning a foreign language, most people prefer to depend on 71 (tradition) methods: reading, writing, listening and repeating. But if you also gesture with your arms while studying, you can remember the vocabulary( 詞 匯 ) 72 (well), even months later. Linking a word to brain areas in charge of movement 73 (make) the memory of its meaning stronger. This is 74 (main) because gestures take away some of the work from learning, 75 (leave) our brains to focus on remembering the vocabulary.

Gesturing also helps to put new vocabulary into context(上下文) and makes it easier to remember. When people gesture, they mentally put themselves in situations 76 are memorable for them. For example, a person will have an easier time remembering the word “ walking” after connecting it 77 a personal memory of physical walking.

"Were the birds on the ice ducks or geese ( 鵝 ) ?" Cruz, 11, and Anthony, 12, couldn't agree. There was only one way to find out. So on a cold January evening, the two friends took a risk onto the frozen lake near their homes.

"First, we threw a stone onto the ice to test it. We thought it would hold our weight. Then we stepped on it," Cruz said. Anthony went first. He took a few steps,

then... He fell through the seemingly frozen ice!

Cruz rushed to help his friend. The lake "ate" him, too. Cruz managed to lift himself out of the freezing water and onto some ice. He then tried to work his way toward Anthony. But the ice didn't hold, and he fell in again. This time, he couldn't get out.

The boys were up to their necks in icy water and quickly losing feeling in their arms and legs. Cruz had a sense that he was going to die.

Anthony's older sister had seen all this and started shouting for help. John Lavin, a neighbor driving nearby heard her. He quickly pulled over. He caught a nearby float( 浮 板 ) , kicked off his shoes. and ran into the water, clearing his way through the ice with his free hand. "It was kind of a ' Hulk smash’.” Lavin later joked.

Lavin made his way to pull the boys back to land. They were taken to hospital immediately. The doctor said their five-minute stay in the water made their body temperature drop nearly ten degrees. Luckily, the boys got well soon. They admire their fearless neighbor just as Hulk, one of Marvel Superheroes.

78. In which season did the story happen?
