We've been driving around in gas—powered cars for over 100 years. Once we run out of all the oil from the Earth, we can't make more. Is it time for a change?

Biofuel

One simple way to use less gas is to fill up with biofuel,a fuel made from plants. Biofuels can be brewed(釀 制) from corn, wheat or other plant waste. Even old cooking oil can be turned into diesel,a fuel used in trucks. Most cars can't run only on biofuel, so it's mixed with gasoline( 汽 油 ) . But every little bit helps!

Go electric

An electric car has an electric motor that runs on batteries, which co me in a big pack. Instead of filling up the tank,an electric car owner plugs(插) it into an outlet to recharge(充電).What happens when the batteries rundown? You need to find somewhere to plug in. It can take any where from 30 minutes to 8 hours to recharge an electric car. That's not as handy as a quick stop at a gas station.

Hybrid (gas + electric)

A hybrid car has two engines — one uses gas and the other uses electricity. For short trips, it turns on batteries like an electric car. But if the batteries are low, the car can change to the gas engine. This can be a good choice for people who are worried about the batteries running out halfway through a trip. But when the car burns gas, it still gives off waste gases like a regular car.

Solar power

Could we use the sun to power cars? Some car companies are working on it. A solar car has an electric motor that runs on batteries. But instead of being plugged in, the batteries are recharged by the solar panels on the car's roof and body. To charge up, you just need to park the car in the sun! But making solar panels and batteries that are powerful enough to move a car is very expensive. It might take a good bit of time before solar cars are available to the general public.

B. They need to be plugged in for recharging.

C. They are too heavy for the batteries to run.

D. They are too expensive for common people to afford now.

45. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Ways to replace gasoline. B. Qualities of different vehicles.

C. Suggestions on reducing air pollution. D. Disadvantages of different kinds of energy.

If you bought some candy months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it's still eatable? The easiest way is to check the use—by date printed on the cover. If that date has already passed, you're likely to throw the candy away. But is that really necessary? According to a report, tons of food is wasted each year, largely because people don't fully understand what use—by dates actually mean and they think the food is not safe to eat.

Use – by dates were introduced in 1975 because customers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When they first showed up, use—by dates only showed freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions.

However, most customers mistakenly believed that use-by dates showed how safe the food was. But the truth is that these dates aren't related to the danger of food poisoning( 中 毒). Eggs, for example, can still be eaten three to five weeks after being bought, even though the use–by date is much earlier. When their use -by dates pass, cookies may lose their delicious taste, but they are not harmful.

"It's an unclear subject, the difference between food quality and food safety, " said Jena Roberts fro m a US food testing company. Even workers in the fiood factory are not sure about it. This is why the use-by dates must be printed on the covers of products. "We hope it can help customers understand the information so that they won't waste a lot of food."

But this won't be a mistake that is easy to correct, because people have believed it for so long. As a result, food factory officials are now thinking about turning the use–by date into a date which can show when food is most likely to be thrown away.

46. What can we know from the first paragraph?

A. Every year most factories produce too much food for people.

B. People throw away food because they think it is unsafe to eat.

C. It's necessary for people to throw away tons of food every year.

Do you ever feel like you are just rushing from one subject to another? When things happen so fast, maybe you can't understand clearly what you are doing or learning, so it is important to stop yourself to think about what you have been doing or learning.

Self—reflection means slowing down and calming yourself, including calming your mind. By calming down and going slowly, you give your brain a chance to think about what it has already received, So me people prefer to do self—reflection only in their mind. Others keep a diary. What's more, taking notes is also OK. Each method works, depending on your own personal learning. You can follow the steps to do self—refection.

First, choose the proper time to do it. School textbooks are divided into units of study. This makes it easier to begin self—reflection. Look for time when you complete a unit of study. Sometimes you know the unit is over because there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self—reflection.

Then, find a quiet place and take out your refection diary. Write down so me notes on the new things that you learned in the unit. Let your mind think about the notes you have written and make some connections.

Finally, think about things that you are not sure of. Maybe you learned a new way to work out a math problem, but you're not sure when to use it. Write down your questions about something you're not sure of. It's helpful to look for answers the next time when you are working with the same topic.

Successful students always know the importance of self—reflection. If you have never taken the time to do self—reflection, try it now.
