I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat writing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I thought that the act of writing is the coolest thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, my mother kept different things for my sister and my brother."But the desk," she said, "it’s for Helen."
Although I knew she loved me and she only showed it in action, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. But they never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was "too emotional(易動感情的)",but she lived "on the surface".
I had my own family later. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she forgave me. I posted the letter and waited for her answer. It didn’t come.
My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and finally, peace — it seemed that nothing happened. I wasn’t even sure if the letter had got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I never heard from her!
Now the present of her desk told, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside — a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times.
Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

Taiwan is famous for its food. To many of us, it is like heaven for foodies(吃貨). Whether you go to restaurants or night markets, there will always be delicious food. The following are four classic Taiwan dishes.
It seems like it would be easy to make an omelet. But the special ingredients(成分) are what make the oyster omelet unique (獨特的). They include oysters, bean sprouts (豆芽) and sweet potato starch (薯粉). What makes a good oyster omelet? People from Taiwan have their own secret — the bigger the oysters, the better. |
The name may sound scary but the food is just the opposite. People cut the toast (吐司面包) into the shape of a box and make a lid (蓋) with the rest. The lid makes it look like a coffin. In the "coffin", there is a seafood soup with pork, mushrooms, peas and carrots. Just break off bits of the bread walls as you eat your way through the soup. |
Drunken Chicken dishes in Taiwan are usually cooked with Shaoxing wine. Some restaurants even serve these dishes with lots of herbs and vegetables. If you like eating meat but don’t want to put on weight, you could try this instead of fried and oily street food. |
This simple dish means a lot to the city of Taipei. They even have a festival for it every year. Put hand-pulled noodles in a spicy(辣的) soup, top it with beef, vegetables, and pickled greens(腌菜), and a bowl of tasty beef noodles is finished. Most places don’t make the soup too spicy because Taiwanese are not traditionally used to be heat. |

Amos Dudley, a 24-year-old boy who studies digital design at New Jersey University of Technology, felt ashamed about his teeth. But being a student, Dudley didn’t have the money to get braces(牙箍). So, he decided to
3-D print his own and marked down the DIY project in a recent blog post. His braces totaled less than $60, and after wearing them for 16 weeks, his teeth are also getting straighter.
Months ago, he mentioned on his blog that he avoided smiling for a while because he was unhappy with his teeth.
However, clear braces can get pricey, costing up to $8,000. But after studying some images of these expensive clear braces, something comes up on him — they looked like that one which can come from a 3-D printer.
So he decided to hit up his school’s 3-D printing equipment and scanned and printed models of his teeth. He
then made non-harmful plastic molds(模子) around them to make 12 sets of braces.
Dudley, who does not recommend attempting any of this at home said that he didn’t ask a dentist for his project. But the student did get information from journal articles and textbooks. And though this was a perfectly
friendly choice to buy braces. He didn’t accept the project just to save money — he was also up for the challenge. "When I realized that I could do something that was a little bit special, while proving my skills as a designer and a maker, and fixing something that was making me self-conscious for actually free, I felt it was more than worth the risk," he said.

Speaking to an adult might make you nervous, but here are other things you can do. Some people express their feelings more easily on paper. Write a letter to someone or keep a diary. Include all the details(細節) about what the bullies do, as well as when and where the bullying happens. You can use it as proof to show what is going on. And it is a wonderful idea to show your letter or diary to a teacher or another responsible adult. Then the bullies will feel very afraid if their names appear in a letter!
